Police: Bicyclist dies after collision with SUV on Chalan Pale Arnold

SAIPAN – A 49-year-old man riding a bicycle died after he was struck by a mid-size SUV along Chalan Pale Arnold, just south of Tropical Laundry in Puerto Rico, according to the Department of Public Safety.

DPS said its 911 dispatch received a report of the collision at about 6:29 p.m. Tuesday. Responding officers and medics found the bicyclist on the roadway; he was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center’s emergency department, where an attending physician pronounced him dead at 6:55 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates the bicyclist had been traveling north in the outer lane when the northbound SUV, driven by a 57-year-old man, struck him. The SUV driver told investigators the bicyclist came to a stop in the roadway and that he was unable to brake in time, DPS said.

The case remains under investigation by the DPS Highway Patrol Division’s Traffic Investigations Unit.
