Tropical Disturbance Brings Showers, Advisories Across Marianas

Small Craft Advisory in effect for Saipan and Tinian; Coastal Flood Advisory for Majuro

SAIPAN – A tropical disturbance, designated Invest 95W, is passing through the Marianas today, bringing showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the islands.

The National Weather Service reports that stronger winds on the northern and eastern edges of 95W prompted a Small Craft Advisory for Saipan and Tinian. Lighter winds are being felt over Guam and Rota.

To the southwest, monsoon flow into 95W is producing heavy rainfall and frequent lightning across Palau and Yap, while fair weather remains farther east near Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The Republic of the Marshall Islands is also mostly clear, though Majuro is under a Coastal Flood Advisory due to king tides expected through the week.

Tropical Development Potential
Invest 95W is currently northwest of Guam near 14.7N 143.8E and rated at a medium chance of development. Forecasters say it may become a tropical depression beyond the next 24 hours, but by then it will likely be well west of the Marianas in the Philippine Sea as it tracks northwest.

No other tropical threats are in the Guam Area of Responsibility at this time, but officials caution that October remains peak typhoon season.

Drought Conditions
Most of the region remains free of drought, but Kapingamarangi continues under Moderate (D1) drought conditions, with worsening dryness expected as no significant rainfall is forecast in the near term.
