Liberation Weekend Could Turn Wetter as Forecasters Watch 92W’s Development

SAIPAN — The first day of school looks a touch drier than earlier expected, but the bigger question mark now sits over Liberation Day weekend, with the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam saying a wetter weekend may be in store depending on the development of Invest 92W.

Tonight brings partly cloudy skies with isolated showers and thunderstorms, light and variable winds and lows around 78, with a 20 percent chance of showers. Tuesday, as public schools open, starts partly sunny with isolated morning showers before turning mostly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon, highs around 87 and a 30 percent chance. Rota runs similar, at 30 percent through Tuesday.

Shower chances climb to 40 percent Tuesday night and hold there through Wednesday night as winds shift northeast at 10 to 15 mph, before Thursday and Friday dry out to 20 percent — a welcome window for Liberation Day’s Friday opening at the Civic Center Grounds.

Then the weekend turns. Saturday goes mostly cloudy at 30 percent, and Sunday through Monday rises to 40 percent with a slight chance of thunderstorms. On the water, combined seas of 4 to 6 feet persist through the week but possibly build over the weekend, reaching 5 to 7 feet Saturday as southwest winds return. Forecasters said the situation will continue to be monitored closely as Invest 92W develops.

Sunset Monday is at 6:41 p.m., with sunrise Tuesday at 6:08 a.m.

At Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, high tide reaches 2.1 feet at 11:16 p.m. Monday, with low tide at 0.5 feet at 6 a.m. Tuesday, high tide at 1.7 feet at 12:16 p.m. and low tide at 1.0 feet at 5:35 p.m. On Tinian, high tide is 1.8 feet at 10:49 p.m. Monday, and on Rota, 2.3 feet at 10:48 p.m.
