Heavy Showers Soak Rota Tonight as Moisture Surges; 92W Still Watched Closely

SAIPAN — Rota is in for a wet night, with numerous locally heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms and a 60 percent chance of rain, as a surge of moisture from the east spreads showers across the southern Marianas, according to the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam.

Saipan and Tinian see scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms tonight with a 40 percent chance and lows around 76. Monday turns partly sunny with isolated showers and a 30 percent chance, with scattered island effect showers developing over Saipan in the afternoon and highs around 87. Monday night drops to a 20 percent chance before Tuesday climbs back to 40 percent, with scattered island effect showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon as winds shift northeast.

On the water, a faster weakening of the monsoon trough to the west has already dropped combined seas to 4 to 6 feet, which hold steady before possibly easing to 4 to 5 feet by Tuesday. Southwest winds go light and variable by Monday.

Forecasters said more bands of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible throughout the week depending on the development and track of Invest 92W in eastern Micronesia. The system will continue to be monitored closely, the forecast said.
