Senate committee to take up Fair Billing Practices Act at June 12 hearing

SAIPAN — A Senate committee will consider a bill aimed at setting fair standards for back billing in the Commonwealth when it meets June 12, taking up consumer-protection legislation as utility billing remains a live issue across the islands.

The Senate Standing Committee on Resources, Economic Development and Workforce, chaired by Sen. Corina L. Magofna, will convene at 10 a.m. Friday, June 12, in the Senate Chamber of the Hon. Vice Speaker Jesus P. Mafnas Memorial Building on Capitol Hill. Magofna, who also serves as Senate vice president, called the open and public meeting under the Interim Rules of the Senate and the Open Government Act.

The committee’s agenda lists House Bill 24-59, HD1, which would enact the CNMI Fair Billing Practices Act. According to the bill’s description, the measure would establish clear and fair standards for back billing practices in the Commonwealth to protect consumers while allowing service providers to recover unpaid amounts lawfully due.
