Beach hazard lifted across the Marianas; officials urge continued caution in the water

SAIPAN — The beach hazard that kept swimmers out of the water across the Marianas for much of Monday has expired, emergency officials said, though they urged the public to keep practicing caution near the ocean.

In a Special Marine Advisory issued at 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 8, the CNMI Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said the Beach Hazards Statement and High Rip Current Risk for Saipan, Tinian and Rota have expired.

The agency said the overall risk for strong rip currents will be decreasing over the next few hours, and that minor sea level fluctuations caused by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake near Mindanao, Philippines earlier in the day are subsiding. Officials said the public should continue to practice caution near or in the water.

Gov. David M. Apatang reminded the general public, mariners and beachgoers to exercise caution when entering the water.

The advisory was compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point based on information from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam.
