MANGILAO, Guam — The Guam Department of Agriculture’s Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources will host its free annual Kids Fishing Derby on June 27, inviting youth ages 5 to 17 to learn fishing skills while building an appreciation for marine conservation and traditional CHamoru fishing practices.
The derby will run from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Ypao Beach Park. DAWR said the event gives young anglers a chance to enjoy friendly competition and connect with Guam’s coastal environment alongside family and friends.
DAWR will hold a free pre-derby fishing clinic the weekend before, on June 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Mangilao Soft Ball Field near Santa Teresita Church. The clinic offers hands-on instruction in basic techniques, including knot tying, casting, fishing safety, and responsible angling, to help new and experienced young anglers build confidence before derby day.
The agency said the choice of venue is significant because Ypao Beach Park sits along one of Guam’s designated marine preserve areas. Throughout the clinic and derby, participants will learn about marine preserves, how they protect fish populations and habitats, and their role in supporting sustainable fisheries.
“Fishing and conservation go hand in hand,” said Robert Koss, Fisheries Technician with DAWR. “We want young anglers to understand that healthy fisheries depend on healthy ecosystems. By learning about marine preserves and responsible fishing practices, participants gain a deeper appreciation for the ocean and the resources that support our island community.”
The derby is funded through a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Conservation Investment, along with support from community partners and sponsors. DAWR recognized the Greg D. Perez Foundation as the event’s primary sponsor, with additional support from Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Marianas and Joint Region Marianas for participant goody bags and educational tools.
Registration information is available from DAWR at 671-735-3982 or by email at leilani.duenas@doag.guam.gov. Individuals requiring special accommodations are asked to contact DAWR at least 48 hours before the event.
