SAIPAN – The Marianas will see partly cloudy skies and isolated showers Sunday, with conditions turning more active through Memorial Day and into Tuesday as east winds increase and shower chances climb across all three islands, the National Weather Service in Tiyan said.
Saipan and Tinian are forecast to see highs near 87 degrees and overnight lows near 78 under east winds of 10 to 15 mph, with a 20 percent chance of showers Sunday increasing to 30 percent Sunday night. Rota will be slightly more active, with partly sunny skies, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms throughout the day, a 30 percent chance of showers, and a 40 percent chance overnight.
The Memorial Day holiday through Tuesday brings mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers to all three islands as east winds strengthen to 15 to 20 mph. Saipan and Tinian carry a 30 percent shower chance during that period with highs near 86, while Rota’s shower chance climbs to 50 percent with highs near 85.
Mariana waters are forecast to see moderate easterlies Sunday with winds easing to gentle to moderate by early Monday. Combined seas are running 4 to 5 feet Sunday and may diminish another foot through the day. A long-period north swell will arrive late Monday and possibly increase seas a foot or two early this week.
Forecasters at NWS Tiyan are also watching Invest 99W, with the system potentially bringing an additional southwest swell into the Marianas mid to late next week. A slight chance of thunderstorms is possible over the coastal waters Wednesday and Thursday.
