CMA Director George J. Cruz Addresses Community on Medicaid Coverage During Sinlaku Recovery

The following is a direct address from Commonwealth Healthcare Medicaid Agency Director George J. Cruz to the CNMI community:

To our families, our providers, and our entire CNMI community, we know the past few days have not been easy. Super Typhoon Sinlaku has impacted our homes, our routines, and our sense of normalcy. And in times like these, uncertainty can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to your health, your coverage, and your access to care.

As Director of the Commonwealth Medicaid Agency, I want to speak to you directly, not just about policy, but our commitment to you. First, our priority is simple: to make sure that no one loses access to healthcare during this time. That is why we have taken immediate action to ensure your Medicaid coverage continues.

No one should have to worry about losing benefits while they are trying to recover, rebuild, and even take care of their families. Second, we are working to make sure care remains available, even when normal systems are disrupted. We have activated emergency flexibilities so that providers can continue serving you, whether that is in clinics, shelters, or temporary care locations. Because access to care should not stop when everything else does.

And third, we are here physically and operationally to support you. Even as many offices remain closed, the CMA has remained open. Our teams are here, adjusting, relocating, and continuing to serve, because we understand that during times like this, access to services matters more than ever.

Our approach during this emergency is guided by one principle: people first. We are making decisions that prioritize your health, your safety, and your ability to receive care without added burden.

But just as important, we are also preparing for what comes next. As our community recovers, we will continue to guide you through any next steps, including eligibility reviews and ongoing services. You will not be left to figure this out alone.

To our healthcare providers, thank you. Your dedication, flexibility, and commitment to serving our people during this time does not go unnoticed. You are a critical part of this response, and we stand with you.

To our community, we see your strength. We see neighbors helping neighbors, families supporting one another, and a community that continues to rise even in the face of hardships. Recovery will take time, but you do not have to face it alone.

The Commonwealth Medicaid Agency is here for you. We are here to protect your coverage. We are here to ensure access to care. And we are here to walk with you every step of the way.

Si Yu’us Ma’ase, Ghillisow, and please stay safe.
